How Much Collagen Do You Actually Need Per Day?

The amount of collagen you need depends on why you are taking it.

Clinical studies commonly use between 2.5 and 15 grams of hydrolysed collagen peptides per day, depending on the product, the intended benefit and the length of the study.

For skin hydration and elasticity, many studies have used approximately 2.5 to 10 grams daily, usually for at least 8 to 12 weeks. Research relating to joint comfort, exercise recovery and connective-tissue support often uses larger servings of around 5 to 15 grams per day.

So, while there is no single perfect collagen dose for everyone, 10 to 15 grams provides a substantial daily serving that falls within the range used in many collagen studies.

Why Does “Hydrolysed” Matter?

Hydrolysed collagen has already been broken down into smaller collagen peptides. This makes it easier to dissolve and digest than intact collagen.

During digestion, these peptides are broken down further and absorbed as amino acids and small peptides, which the body can then use as building blocks for its own proteins and connective tissues.

Check the Serving, Not Just the Front Label

A product may advertise collagen prominently while supplying only a small amount per recommended serving.

If a capsule-based product provides 2 grams per serving, reaching 10 grams would require five servings. If a powder supplies 5 grams per scoop, reaching 15 grams would require three scoops.

That is where many collagen routines quietly fall apart: the product contains collagen, but the daily serving may not provide the amount the customer thinks they are getting.

When choosing a collagen product, check:

  • The grams of collagen in the full recommended serving
  • Whether it contains hydrolysed collagen peptides
  • How many scoops, capsules or portions are required each day
  • Whether the serving is realistic enough to take consistently

Because the best collagen routine is not only about what is inside the product. It is also about whether you can take a meaningful serving every day.

In Friday’s post, we’ll look at a simpler way to make that daily consistency easier.
